The Editors Reply
We would like to thank our readers for taking us to task onwhat was viewed as an "anti-union" point of view in our lasteditorial. We would like to clarify several points:
The Editors (a nurse and a physician) do not speak for AACN,and our editorials are not reviewed by the Association priorto publication.
We agree with our readers that deterioratingworking conditionsin the hospital must be challenged. Exploitationof healthcareprofessionals in the name of "patient-centeredcare" is stillexploitation.
Collective bargaining and otherunion activities can lead topositive changes in the hospitalenvironment that would nototherwise occur. Our history is filledwith examples.
The hallmark of a professional is personalautonomy. At times, unions lead professionals (nurses and physicians)to act inways that conflict with personal and professionalvalues.
