I just read with great interest the editorial titled "Doctorate of Nursing Practice—MRI or Total Body Scan?" (July 2005: 278–281). What the nursing profession has had for at least the last 40 years is an identity crisis. We already have too many layers of education and complexity. The proof of this is the alphabet soup of titles that many nurses proudly write after their names, myself included. But enough is enough. We need to take a deep breath, get some collective psychotherapy as a profession, and continue to keep our eye on the ultimate objective: producing well-educated, well-trained, highly skilled healthcare professionals who can provide high-quality care to patients at an affordable price.
