1. importance of rest in critical care

After reading the article on family-centered care I felt compelled to write as I am dealing with this situation in my hospital of employment. My hospital has opened up visiting hours 24/7 in critical care.

I do believe family-centered care can be helpful at times, but control of the environment is key. I have found that family-centered care causes overstimulation to patients (vented and nonvented), interruptions to nurses during medicine administration, continuous questions about equipment from numerous family members (due to lack of knowledge), and transmissions of pathogens. These are key problems in this setting.

Many times a patient will tell me that he or she is glad the family is gone so the patient can get some rest.

These are only a handful of the many problems I have encountered. I would like to hear what others think.
