Critical Care Providers’ Perceptions of the Use of Vasopressin in Cardiac Arrest
Published guidelines list epinephrine and vasopressin as either/or choices for treatment of ventricular fibrillation and/or pulseless ventricular tachycardia, yet little is known about how critical care providers respond to this recommendation. The authors assessed the use of vasopressin as a first-line drug of choice for ventricular fibrillation and/or pulseless ventricular tachycardia and describe factors that may influence the decision to use vasopressin.

Family Presence During Resuscitation: A Critical Review of the Literature
Presence of patients' families during resuscitation has emerged as an important practice issue, sparking considerable controversy worldwide. Qualitative researchers have explored the lived experience of family members present during resuscitation and less commonly the perspectives of patients and healthcare providers. In this article, the author reviews the current state of the science and discusses the ethical-theoretical perspectives of respective researchers and staff participants in the reviewed studies.

Factors That Enable or Complicate End-of-Life Transitions in Critical Care
Nurses in MICUs are routinely involved in negotiations to maintain or withdraw life support. The objective of this study was to describe MICU nurses' experiences in changing from cure- to comfort-oriented care in the midst of a patient's medical treatment. Specifically, the goal was to identify factors that either enable or complicate transitions in patients' care.

Moral Distress of Staff Nurses in a Medical Intensive Care Unit
Moral distress has been associated with job dissatisfaction and loss of nurses from the workplace and the profession. In this study, 28 nurses working in a MICU completed a 38-item moral distress scale and described implications of experiences of moral distress. The authors identified situations that result in high levels of moral distress and evaluated associations among moral distress and individual characteristics of nurses.

Development of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses’ Sedation Assessment Scale for Critically Ill Patients
In this article, the authors present the outcome of phase 2 of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses sedation assessment project, namely, the development of a new sedation assessment scale for critically ill patients. The authors define each of the 5 scale domains-consciousness, agitation, anxiety, sleep, and patient--ventilator synchrony--and present information on how indicators were selected to assess each domain.

Novel Spanish Translators for Acute Care Nurses and Physicians: Usefulness and Effect on Practitioners’ Stress
Language barriers are significant impediments to providing quality healthcare and contribute to stress for healthcare providers. These authors developed a translation tool, the Focused Accessible Spanish Translator (FAST), to be used to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients. The FAST contains phrases that nurses and physicians use in their daily practice. The authors assessed the effect of the language barrier on nurses and physicians in their institution and determined the effectiveness of the FAST at bridging that barrier.
